Excerpt from "The Goddess Documents"

“I talk to people all the time who want more fulfillment
in life. They think they can get it by doing something or
waiting for something or hoping something will happen.
Then they’ll be fulfilled. I used to be like that – waiting for
the day when happiness and fulfillment would come my way.
There I was in a job I didn’t much like. Talking about how I
would find a way to do work with more meaning in the world.
But you know that’s all I was doing - talking about it. When
I get more time, when I find a place to volunteer close to
home, when I find a worthy organization that helps kids.
That’s when I’ll join. That’s when I’ll make a difference.
Then I just stopped. I stopped waiting. I just lived.
Stopped in my tracks and surveyed my own landscape. I
looked at exactly where I stood in that moment. In that
moment, I felt the difference. I finally got it. That’s all there
is – feeling. It’s really not about what I do or even about my
results. Then I started listening. Listening to my heart.
Now, for me, it’s become all about how I do what I do. Do I
do it fully? Do I give my all? Do I do what I do in joy and
service? When I am doing that I’m not worried about
fulfillment. I’m experiencing it. Being happy is really how
we are, with people, on the job, in the circumstance. But
mostly how we are with ourselves. That’s where happiness
and fulfillment lie. In giving what we have fully and in joy in
every moment, no matter what we’re doing.

By the way, the week after I “stopped”, the perfect
volunteer job appeared. Next I had a chance to move into a
new position. Now I’m happier than ever.”
